Voluntary Work

Voluntary Work at Citizens Advice Shropshire (CAS)

CAS employs a small number of paid staff, but relies heavily on a much larger number of volunteers at all our sites.

Volunteers come from all walks of life, some having long work experience and qualifications, while others don't. You should not be put off if you don't have a career, or haven't gained any qualifications, we still need you.

We are looking for people who want to help in this important work, and be willing to work as a team member. You need to be reliable, have an open mind, be able to get on with people and have a willingness to learn.

There are all sorts of ways that you could help, such as training to be a:

•  Generalist Adviser
•  Administration Support Worker
•  Receptionist
•  Trustee Board member

More about these roles can be found below.

Joining us as a volunteer has many advantages including:

  • Being part of a successful, professional and supportive team
  • Being involved in your community
  • Working in a pleasant and modern office environmemt
  • Training & Development opportunities
  • Board membership

All volunteers are paid out of pocket travel expenses.

If you are interested in helping us, please phone 07 910872592 or click here for our volunteer enquiry form.

Generalist Adviser

Generalist Advisers are expected to work at least 1 day per week (approximately 9.30 to 4pm) and undergo a comprehensive training programme that takes approximately one year during which trainees spend about four months undertaking theoretical work before practicing their advice skills under supervision. During the training period you are expected to volunteer one and a half days a week.  However, in line with our equal opportunity policy flexibility in hours worked maybe possible where appropriate.  The training is structured and well recognized.

General Advisers help clients to explain, explore and clarify their problems.  The advisers have access to a comprehensive information system to help clients and there is always a supervisor on hand to help with difficult problems.  The adviser then explains to clients the choices that they have so that clients can decide what they want to do.  Advisers also help clients by filling in forms, drafting letters, making phone calls and calculating benefits.

Receptionist

Our Receptionists are the first point of contact for people visiting the bureau and their role is to meet and greet visitors, offer information on our services and those of local organisations. Relevant training will be provided.

Administrative Support Workers

This role involves assisting to keep the administrative procedures in the bureau working smoothly. This could involve word processing, filing, scanning, photocopying and other administrative tasks. Ongoing development training is available.

Trustee Board Members

We are always looking to recruit suitably skilled members of the community to join our Trustee Board which takes ultimate responsibility for managing the service and setting the strategy for development. Ideally you will have management experience or knowledge regarding the voluntary sector, finance or local government, however more important, is a sense of wanting to contribute to our community's wellbeing as we can provide training to help you develop into your role. The Trustee Board meets 6 times per year and this plus additional sub committee work means that you would need to commit several hours per month to this role.
